Broadleaved Willowherb has a small pink flower and is easily seen along the Crane in August. This wildflower is also found in shady corners of back gardens.

Great Willowherb continues to charm during August but its season will soon be over. This particular plant is from a pathside verge on Crane Park Island.

Great Willowherb continues to charm during August but its season will soon be over. This particular plant is from a pathside verge on Crane Park Island.

This slightly fading Red Admiral is resting on a nettle leaf. In August both this butterfly and the superficially similar Painted Lady can be found along the Crane.

The millenium pond on Crane Park Island is one of the best places to look in August for one of our native waterside plants, the Water Mint.

The Large White is the biggest of the three white butterflies that can be found along the Crane. This August specimen is looking a little bit dog-eared.

Marjoram is a fragrant herb that is in flower in August and can be found in the meadow to the west of Hospital Bridge Road.

Areas of still water are normally host to Pond Skaters in August. In fact the Crane does not have many ponds, with Crane Park Island providing the best habitat.

Great Bindweed is a much maligned plant along the Crane and yet it is a firm favourite amongst the local honey bees.

Young shieldbugs pass through several moults before becoming adults. This appears to be a mature nymph form of the Hawthorn Shieldbug, Acanthosoma haemorrhoidale.

These snails (probably Garden Snails) were seen one August afternoon wedged into the trunk of a Horse Chestnut tree in Crane Park.
