This is another good month for fungi, with this clump thriving amidst ivy on a decaying log on Crane Park Island.

Some lime leaves are still bright green and provide a source of sparkle in the cool November light of afternoon.

A gaze up into the canopy of a young Hornbeam tree sees a mosaic of fading leaves, turning yellow and then chestnut as they prepare to fall to ground.

A careful search of the Crane will reveal some surprising plants still in flower this month. This Dog's Mercury in Mereway Nature Park is still in flower, albeit barely.

Surprisingly even in November new growth can be seen, although this plant is unlikely to develop further until the days get longer.

Surprisingly even in November new growth can be seen, although this plant is unlikely to develop further until the days get longer.

Fallen leaves gather in the undergrowth and begin the process of returning their nutrients to the underlying soil.

It is already hard to believe that just a few months ago this was a wet meadow full of flowers such as Meadowsweet and Meadow Vetchling.

The cycles of leaf fall differ dramatically between species. The Ash on the left has discarded almost all its leaves by late November and yet the Cherry to the right is still ablaze.

The die back of the riparian vegetation reveals the holes of water voles, which have been submerged by succulent grasses over the summer months.
